Abstract

752,792. Lathe and like centres. ROHM, G. H. Jan. 1, 1954, No. 79/54. Class 83 (3). A live lathe &c. centre comprises a housing 1 with tapered shank 6, a centre-tip 2 with a shaft 5, bearings 3, 4 supporting the shaft within the housing and permitting the shaft to move axially, under pressure from the work, against resilient means, an annular groove 15 surrounding the shaft 5 and forming a chamber containing a fluent medium, e.g. oil or grease, a ring 14 to transmit said pressure to said medium and means 22 for indicating the pressure in the chamber. The groove may contain a resilient ring 16 with recess 18 constituting the groove. Groove 18 communicates through bores 19, 20 with pressure gauge 22, and the pressure may be adjusted by moving a ball member in a bore leading from bore 19. The shaft end remote from the tip is supported by a needle-bearing 7 which may be located in the housing if the shaft does not extend into shank 6, and a spring 8 may act on the shaft through a cup 9 and bell 10, to resist movement of the tip into the housing. In another arrangement, bore 20 leads to a bore containing a spring- pressed plunger visible through a window and carrying graduations. In a further arrangement, the medium in groove 18 actuates a piston in bore 19, which piston operates a dial-gauge through a bell-crank lever.
