Abstract
552,051. Bearings. SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES), Ltd., S., MEREDITH, F. W., and OWENS, F. H. Aug. 18, 1941, No. 10491. [Class 12 (i)] A bearing to withstand shocks comprises a journal member 12, Fig. 1, and a thrust member such as a ball 17, which engages member 12 and is constrained against radial movement, axial pressure being supplied by a spring- 26 so as to centre the member 12 and press it against a transverse face 14 of the housing 13 whilst engaging faces of members 12, 17 permit radial movement of member 12 under stress. Ball 17 is centred by a plate 19 in the housing, or by the housing itself and is engaged by spring 26 or a spring holder 23. Member 1d has a conical depression 16 to seat ball 17. In a modification, Fig. 4, the journal and thrust members have interengaging conical faces 31, 32, the thrust member having a part spherical surface 33 which engages a cylindrical wall 34 in the housing. The thrust member may be pressed by a spring diaphragm 39 and may carry an adjusting screw 36 with a floating palate 37.
