Abstract

924,263. Bearings. I. A. WIGLEY. Oct. 17, 1960 [July 18, 1959], No. 24749/59. Class 12 (1). [Also in Groups XXV and XXXVIII] A bearing assembly comprises a spindle 11 Fig. 2, supported by a plastics bush 18 of annular cross-section, the bush having a greater external diameter at an intermediate point of its length than at its ends and being a tight fit in a rigid outer shell 17. The shell is a light press-fit in a bore of an outer member 12. The bush is of polytetrafluoroethylene or other deformable plastics material. The bore of the bush is sized by the insertion of a polished tool, Fig. 3, which deforms the bush 18 and the shell 17. When the tool is withdrawn the bush 18 is the correct fit on the spindle 11. The outer member 12 is softer than the shell 17 and the shell 17 is forced into the outer member 12 so that it forms its own seating and becomes self-aligning.
