Abstract

751,641. Pneumatic tyres. FENTON, E. R. July 7, 1954 [March 16, 1954], No. 7558/54. Class 144 (2). For better grip on wet or icy roads, the tread surface of a pneumatic tyre is formed with a series of recesses 11 which are interconnected circumferentially by air ducts 12 and laterally by air ducts 13 the ends of which terminate at the sides of the tread and are provided with small outlets or bleeder valves. As shown the ducts 12 are formed in the rubber of the tread and the ducts 13 comprise rigid tubes embedded in the tread. The outer ends of the laterally outer tubes 13 are covered by the sides of the tread except for narrow slits 16 therein which open under load. In use the ducts 12 are successively flattened as the tyre rotates and the air trapped in the relevant recesses in the roadcontacting area is expelled through the ducts 13 to create a partial vacuum which is released as the ducts 12 open on leaving the roadcontacting area.
