Abstract
750,478. Handle-bar control mechanism. EASTON, H., and FARGION, B. R. Nov. 6, 1953 [Nov. 6, 1952], No. 28007/52. Class 136 (1). A control device in the form of a twist grip has a cable drum formed by flanges 2, 3 on a tube 1, the drum being adapted to receive at least two.Bowden cables 16 the nipples 18 of which rest against the ends of the flanges 2, 3 which extend over only half the circumference of the tube 1. A split housing 5, 6 surrounds the cable drum. The maximum tension applicable to each cable is defined by a loose stop member 20 contained in a channel 8 in the member 6. The nipples 18 are of such a size that they can move in the member 6 but not in the member 5. When the grip is twisted either way, the trailing end of the flanges 2, 3 passes into the member 5 and the nipple 18 rests against the edge of the member 5. Further movement is possible until the nipple at the leading edge of the flanges pushes the member 20 into contact with the aforementioned nipple. The grip is retained in any desired rotational position by a ball 10 urged by a spring 11 into frictional engagement with the flange 3. The control is held in the clutch fully withdrawn position by the ball 10 entering a hole 21 in the flange 3. The ball and spring may be replaced by a ratchet device. As shown in Fig. 4, the cable may be directly adjusted by a knurled nut 23 which engages a threaded member 24. A grub screw 26 engages a longitudinal slot 25 in the member 24.
