Abstract

1409524 Bowden mechanisms BOWDEN CONTROLS Ltd 6 Sept 1972 [23 Sept 1971 26 Jan 1972] 44436/71 and 3727/72 Heading F2K In a Bowden mechanism wherein an outer flexible conduit 1, 1a formed from a single wire coil, Fig. 1, or an interwound wire coil, Fig. 5, is secured to a fixed member 3 (Fig. 1), or 16 (Fig. 5), a nut (17, Fig. 5) or nuts (4, 5, Fig. 1) is or are screwed on to a screw-thread formed on the outside of the conduit due to its coiled construction to secure it to the fixed member 3 or 16. In each embodiment shown a nylon sheath 7, 21 is provided to lubricate the passage of the central cable 9, 19, a plug 8 in the case of Fig. 1 or 22, Fig. 5, retaining this in the conduit 1, 1a. In Fig. 1 the two nuts have a slightly different thread pitch from the outside of the conduit so that they may hold it securely, the nut 17 of Fig. 5, having portions 18 bent to retain it, although this may be replaced by a tapered nut fitting in a tapered hole of the fixed member 16. The cable 19 of Fig. 5 has rods 20 secured to each end of it so that the mechanism may be used in push as well as pull operations. A further embodiment replaces the nut 17 of Fig. 5, with a nut (17c, Fig. 13, not shown) having a spigot portion to fit in the hole in member 16, with a further nut locking this in position and having projections which engage in a groove of the first nut. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 the cable can be coated with PTFE as an additional friction reducing device.
