Abstract

546,430. Bowden mechanism; toothed gearing. BRITISH ROPES, Ltd., and PATTISSON, A. R. Jan. 9, 1941, No. 348. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (iii)] Relates to flexible power-transmission members or cables of the kind in which about a flexible core one or more windings of wire or the like are arranged to form worm or thread-like projections adapted to engage a correspondingly formed element. According to the invention, the windings are of such section that an interlocking engagement is secured. The wires 1, Fig. 1, which provide the projections, are arranged in alternation and in interlocking engagement with circular wires 2 and both wires are wound about close coiled wires 3 of a non-interlocking character in turn wound upon a core formed of wires 4 arranged in long lay about a central core-element 5. In a modification the wires are of T-form the head having concave hide faces engaging the wires 2, a third winding being included also having concave side faces. In Fig. 3, the projecting wires 8 are of wedge formation the inner edges of which extend to, or in a modification nearly to, the inner surface of wires 9. In Fig. 4 wires 10 of generally T-shape have the adjacent surfaces of the head of the T inclined and have also depressions 11 engaging flanges 12 of an inner wire 13. In Fig. 7, the wire 18 forming the projections has its base 19 formed with convex surfaces. In Fig. 9, the flexible member 23, 24 is in engagement with worm wheels 22, 22a and also with sleeves 25, 26 constituting journals for the driving member and engaged in split bearings 27, between which sleeves 28 secured to these bearings may be arranged.
