Abstract
727,402. Securing knobs to shafts. COSSOR, Ltd., A. C. July 8, 1952 [July 19, 1951], No. 17193/51. Class 80 (2) [Also in Groups XIV and XL(c)]. A knob for use upon the metal shaft 23 of an adjustable electric component comprises a body portion 10 of insulating material shrouding the end of the shaft, metal fastening means 17 &c., for fixing the body portion to the shaft, located in a recess 13 in the body portion, and a closure portion 11 of insulating material detachably fixed within the recess to the body portion and adapted to cover the metal fastening means and shaft end and thus prevent contact being made with the metal parts before the closure portion has been removed. The knob has a D-shaped hole at 12 for the reception of the shaft 23, having a flat 24 at its end, and a flat metal spring 16 is located in an elongated slot in the knob, between the hole and the recess 13 into which the closure portion 11 is threaded, to reduce the slack between the shaft and knob. A bent wire spring clip 17 secures the knob to the shaft, its inner limbs engaging a groove at the end of the shaft and also a projection 15 on the body portion 11, which latter prevents the knob from turning relatively to the clip. The end 26 of the shaft may be rounded so that the knob can be pushed on to the shaft with the closure portion 11 in situ when the clip 17 will engage the shaft groove 25; in a modification, the shaft has a number of axiallyspaced grooves having a saw-tooth shape in longitudinal section whereby the knob can be secured to the shaft in different axial positions. A pronged tool is described for engagement with holes in the closure member 11 when it is desired to unscrew the latter from the body portion 10.
