Abstract
524,615. Handle - bar control mechanism. TISDELL, T. A., and AMAL Ltd. Feb. 3, 1939, No. 3678. [Class 136 (i)] In twist-grip control mechanism of the type in which the inner wire of a Bowden transmission' is wound on a sleeve or drum when the latter is rotated on a handle-bar, the rotary sleeve or drum is held against longitudinal movement on the handle-bar by a curved member fixed to the handle-bar and arranged to engage a peripheral groove in the rotary sleeve or drum. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a sleeve 2 having the usual rubber grip 3 is rotatably mounted on a handle-bar 1 and is provided at one end with an upstanding flange 4, thus providing a flat groove 5 between the flange and the end of the grip 3. A spring clip 6 is mounted on the handle-bar 1 and is provided with an integral extension in the form of a curved spring member 7 adapted to embrace and grip a part of the periphery of the groove 5, thereby holding the rotary sleeve 2 against endwise movement, but providing the desired degree of frictional resistance to angular movement. The frictional resistance may be made adjustable by the addition of a screw &c. A projecting tongue 11 on the side of the clip 6 engages a cut-away slot 12 in the flange 4 to limit the angular movement of the twist grip. The terminal nipple of the inner Bowden cable is engaged with a slotted hook-like connector 13 secured in the groove 5 of the rotary sleeve, and the end collar of the outer Bowden casing abuts against a bent-over and slotted bead 8 on the clip 6 and curved member 7.
