In order to throw continuously delivered yarn on to a bobbin without the yarn package having a long loose tail, guides are arranged on a ring twisting machine to cause means rotating with the package to engage the yarn over a predetermined portion of the traverse of the ring rail. On removal of a full bobbin, the yarn is passed from the feed roll 34 to a balloon guide 38, thence to an upper guide 44 and back to the feed roll 34. After an empty bobbin 27 has been placed on the spindle, the yarn extending between guides 38, 44 is manually drawn through the ring 13, engaged in the traveller 12 and slipped under the hooks 41, 43 of a lower guide 42, the bobbin 27 and its driving base 23 being kept stationary during this operation by a spindle brake. When the brake is released and the bobbin 27 and base 23 rotate, the yarn is drawn into a slot 28 in the edge of the base 23 and is held firmly against a resilient insert, so that winding begins and the yarn breaks at the lower face of the base 23. Contact of the yarn with the base 23 only takes place when the ring rail 16 has been lowered to a predetermined point.
