Abstract

747,825. Separating solid materials. FULLER CO. Oct. 17, 1952 [Dec. 15, 1951], No. 26050/52. Class 117. In an apparatus for separating from a moving stream of pulverulent material foreign substances of greater density than the material, wherein a column of the material is maintained on a gas-permeable member through which gas is diffused to fluidize the material thereon, and the moving stream of material is directed into the column of fluidized material to separate the foreign substances by gravity; the column is maintained in a housing 40 containing two airpermeable members 45 forming a wedgeshaped supporting structure having air chambers 43 which are supplied with air through pipes 46. A discharge opening 47 is closed by a hinged gate 49 controlled by an external handle whereby foreign material may be discharged on to a further valve gate 54. The valve 49 is closed and the valve 54 opened by an external handle to remove the foreign material. The material forming the column may be placed there prior to the operation or may be collected from the moving stream. The material may be fed to and from the column maintained in the housing 40, by an air activated gravity conveyer of the type described in Specification 674,395, [Group XXX], Fig. 4 (not shown), or by a conventional screw conveyer, Fig. 1 (not shown).
