Abstract

A soldering flux for use in making a joint having an aluminium or aluminium alloy component comprises potassium chloride 10-50 per cent, lithium chloride 8-50 per cent, sodium chloride 10-50 per cent, zinc chloride 0,5-20 per cent and lithium fluoride 7-20 per cent. It may also include cadmium chloride 0,5-10 per cent (which may entirely replace zinc chloride), stannous chloride, lead chloride and antimony chloride 0,5-10 per cent, a halide of one or more of Mg, Ba, Ca, Cu, Ni, Ag 0,5-10 per cent, and a bromide or iodide of K, Li, Na, Zn or a fluoride of K, Na, Zn 0,5-10 per cent. Solders for use therewith may comprise Al 10-75 per cent, Mg 25-75 per cent, Si 0-15 per cent, Cu 0-20 per cent, Cd 0-20 per cent, Ag 0-10 per cent; or Zn 50-100 per cent; Mg 0-10 per cent, Al 0-30 per cent, Cd 0-50 per cent, Ag 0-20 per cent, Pb 0-20 per cent; or Ag 0-10 per cent, Zn 0-50 per cent, Mg 0-30 per cent, Al 0-30 per cent, Cd balance; or Zn 0-50 per cent, Pb 0-50 per cent, Cd 0-20 per cent, Ag 0-20 per cent, Sb 0-10 per cent, Sn balance; such solders may also comprise ,25-5 per cent of each of such of Na, Mn, Ni, Sb, Bi, Si, ,25-9 per cent of such of Sn, Cu, Pb as are not already contained therein in accordance with the aforementioned compositions.
