Abstract
Surgical ligatures and sutures consist of wire made by drawing magnesium or its resorbable alloys in known manner to a diameter of about 0,3 m.m. and then drawing to a diameter of at most 0,2 m.m., particularly 0,04-0,1 m.m., with the application of heat, preferably with exclusion of air, at least after each diameter decrease of 20 per cent. The diameter decrease in each draw stage is preferably substantially less than 20 per cent. The heating may be effected in an oil bath or in vacuo. The wires may be twisted to strands and the strands to ropes in any customary manner. The alloys preferably contain at least 75 per cent by weight of magnesium, the most important alloying metal being aluminium, which may be present in amounts of 10-15 per cent, but preferably not more than 6,5 per cent. Iron and base non-ferrous metals may be used which are non-poisonous, unlike lead, silver, barium or arsenic. Suitable metals are silicon, manganese, zinc, cadmium, copper, nickel, cobalt, tin, antimony, bismuth, lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium, strontium, titanium, beryllium, or mixtures thereof. Specification 319,886, [Class 81 (ii)], is referred to.ALSO:Surgical ligatures and sutures consist of wire made by drawing magnesium or its resorbable alloys.
