Abstract

Self-improving aluminium alloys containing 5-20 per cent of copper, 1-3 per cent each of chromium, manganese and tungsten, 0,1-3 per cent of nickel and 0,1-2 per cent of alkali or alkaline earth metals viz. lithium, sodium, potassium, beryllum, magnesium, calcium, strontium, and barium, are made by adding alloys of copper, chromium, manganese, tungsten, and nickel, with aluminium to molten aluminium and then adding to the melt the alkali or alkaline-earth metals in their elementary form or in the form of alloys. Up to 5 per cent of silver, up to 10 per cent of cadmium, and up to 3 per cent of cobalt, molybdenum and vanadium may also be incorporated in the alloy by adding alloys of these metals with aluminium to the melt before the addition of the alkali &c. metals. Aluminium alloys containing 20 per cent of tungsten or 10 per cent of manganese or 50 per cent of copper or 20 per cent of chromium or 20 per cent of cobalt and a nickel magnesium alloy containing 50 per cent of nickel are used as additions to the molten aluminium to form the final alloy.
