Abstract

285,674. Alloy Welding Processes, Ltd., and Clarke, E. J. March 29, 1927. Uniting by fusion.-An electrode for arc welding aluminium or alloys thereof other than aluminium bronze, consists of a wire, rod or strip core of aluminium or alloy thereof coated with a flux containing a reducing agent, preferably a carbonaceous material such as carbon, charcoal or sawdust, so as to form a reducing atmosphere round the arc. The flux may also contain ingredients such as alkali chlorides, fluorides, borates, bisulphates &c. The ingredients are ground to a fine powder and made into a paste with water or water with some dextrine or other agglutinant and may be applied as described in Specification 127,315. One composition may consist of 40 per cent potassium chloride, 5 per cent lithium chloride, 30 per cent sodium chloride, 10 per cent potassium bisulphate, 10 per cent potassium fluoride, and 5 per cent powdered charcoal. Further examples may consist of 24 per cent each of potassium fluoride and barium chloride, and 37 per cent of potassium fluoride together with either 11 per cent of potassium bisulphate and 4 per cent of charcoal or 12 per cent of potassium bisulphate and 3 per cent of charcoal sawdust. Other examples consist of 50 parts each of potassium fluoride and chloride together with either 5 to 15 parts of charcoal or 10 to 20 parts of sawdust. The core may be coated electrolytically or by dipping with a metal such as copper or nickel for alloying with the aluminium or assisting in preventing the formation of aluminium oxide, while a metal such as copper. nickel, or silicon may also be added to the coating for the same purpose. Specification 198,202 is referred to
