Description
The invention relates to coated electrodes for the electric arc welding of Aluminum or aluminum alloys with one of aluminum or aluminum alloys existing metal core. Fluxes that are always present are used to weld aluminum Able to dissolve aluminum oxide and mainly from halides of alkali metals exist. There are also coated electrodes for electric arc welding known from aluminum and its alloys, the coating of which is halides of alkali metals and cryolite or Contains charcoal or sawdust. A number of deficiencies are inherent in these electrodes at; above all, the welding process does not start until after a long period of preheating of the workpiece, and the weld itself falls as a result of heavy drop formation and the instability of the arc imperfectly.
The invention transforms this by providing encapsulated electrodes made of aluminum or aluminum alloys which do not exhibit all of the prior deficiencies in the arc welding of aluminum. The electrodes according to the invention have a covering which consists of 50 to 60 o / o KCl, 20 to 300/0 LiF, 10 to 20 o / o NaCl-AlCl 3 , 0.5 to 7 o / o NaF. The ingredients are made into a paste by adding water and thus applied to the wire. This envelope meets all the requirements that must be placed on it 3, and guarantees a perfectly flawless and easy-to-perform welding of aluminum and its alloys. The paste is self-binding, not hygroscopic, adheres firmly to the electrodes and has good mechanical properties. During the welding process itself, the coating is melted evenly with the welding rod without crumbling off prematurely, thus covering the resulting bead and also making it easy to maintain a stable arc, whereby a uniform bead exists from the start of welding without preheating the workpiece necessary is.
The slag formed on the weld seam by these encased electrodes is difficult to remove by brushing, even after it has been moistened with water. However, one set of the paste described above, up to 2 0/0 bichromate added, for example 1 o / o K 2 Cr 2 O 7, the slag is porous and can be determined by moistening with water easily detached.
