Abstract

746,280. Fuel-injection pumps. BRITISH INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Nov. 23, 1953 [Nov. 24, 1952; July 10, 1953], Nos. 29681/52 and 19182/53. Class 102(1). In a fuel-injection pump, the pump piston 41 is connected to a spring- loaded piston 40 which is actuated by pressure liquid supplied by a pump driven by the engine and the supply and exhaust is controlled by a balanced valve 24 actuated by a cam 30 driven by the engine. The pressure liquid is drawn from a tank fitted with a cooler and passes from the pump through a filter and by-pass valve to the annular space 17 which is connected through a valve 19 to a pressure accumulator space 20 bounded by a diaphragm 22 subjected to gas pressure in a space 21. The piston 40 has a flange 56 sliding in a counterbore 54 and the space 53 forms a dashpot supplied with liquid through passages 58 and a helical port 57 which co-operates with a helical surface in the cylinder 55 so that when the port 57 is closed the piston is brought to rest. The point at which this occurs is adjusted, together with the usual control surfaces on the pump piston 41, by rotation of the pistons by a pinion 45 ; a projection 48 forms a pivot for ease of adjustment. The pump may be associated with means to obtain a preliminary injection, e.g., the delivery valve as described in Specification 744,293.
