Classes 7(2) and 7(3) In apparatus comprising a hollow member 3, located between an air filter 2 and an engine induction pipe 1, and which has a hollow branch 4 with an annular open receptacle 5 at its outer end, the member 3 contains an externally-operable valve 6 such that during normal engine operation there is no restriction of the air flow from the filter 2 to the pipe 1, but on closing the valve the filter 2 is blanked off and air can only enter the engine through the branch 4 so that on burning methylated spirit in the receptacle 5 the resulting flames will be drawn into the pipe 1 and the engine cylinder, not shown, upon cranking the engine. The receptacle 5 may be integral with or removable from the branch 4 and the valve 6, which may be a flap slide or as shown a butterfly valve, is provided with an arm 7 loaded by an over-centre spring. 11. The branch 4 may be lagged with heat insulating material and formed with internal fins, not shown. During normal engine operation the open end of the branch 4 is closed by a cap 8 and the valve 6 is open;. to start the engine the cap is removed and the valve 6 closed.
