Abstract
739,466. Heating cylinders and induction manifolds..GREEN & SON, Ltd., T., and KNIGHT, F. B. March 10, 1954, No. 7022/54. Classes 7(2) and 7(3). In a device for facilitating the starting of compressionignition engines, comprising an open-top annular trough 1 permanently or removably connected at an inlet to the induction manifold 3, the flames from a combustible substance, such as methylated spirits or metaldehyde, burnt in the trough are drawn through the centre thereof to pass, either directly or through an air cleaner, into the manifold 3 upon cranking the engine. The trough 1 is integral with or connected to a tube 2 which may engage over, as shown, or be fitted into the manifold 3. In a modification, the trough has a laterally extending web so that it may be placed on top of the air cleaner after the cover has been removed therefrom. In another modification, the trough is fitted around the outside of the air cleaner core or permanently or removably supported within the entrance to the latter.
