Abstract

745,995. Adjustable chairs. AEROTHERM CORPORATION. March 12, 1954 [Dec. 16, 1953], No. 7286/54. Class 52(2). In a chair having a back 48 pivoted at 52 to the seat frame 12 and a fixed armrest 4, the back is held in adjusted position by a friction clamp located in the armrest, releasable by a press-button 76 and acting on a link 58 extending into the arm rest and pivoted to the back at 60. Link 58 slides within a channel 56, Fig. 6, in the arm-rest and is formed with a rack 58 engaging a pinion 62 the shaft 64 of which carries a drum 66 braked by several turns of a cable 68. This cable is adjustably anchored at one end 70 to the channel 56 and is pivotally connected at the other end to the spindle 74 of the press-button 76. A spring 82 urges the button and cable to locking position. A spring 84, which is just strong enough to urge the link 58 to the right against the friction of the cable when button 76 is actuated, restores the back to upright position. The arm rest is pivoted at 90 to the upper end of a rod 36 pivoted to the seat frame 12 at 88. Rod 36 carries a pin 40 which can be engaged in recess 44, Fig. 8, formed between jaws 22, 24 carried on a brace 18 and urged together by a spring 34. When the pin is forced from the recess, the arm rest and back can be folded down to the dotted-line position of Fig. 4. The leg assemblies of the chair may fold to lie under the seat.
