In a shearing or clipping head having a cutter reciprocated relatively to a comb by a vacuum operated rocker, a hair-excluding elastic closure, with a throat engaging the rocker, is fitted in the rocker chamber between the cutter and the forward end of the chamber. As shown, in a clipping machine as disclosed in Specification 515,915, in which a vane D, secured to a lever E engaging a slot in the rocker F to reciprocate the cutter G, is oscillated in a chamber B by the alternate application of vacuum and atmosphere to opposite sides of the vane by a valve at the rear end of the clipper, a channel-section flexible rubber closure 1 comprising a web 2, a front wall 5 with a throat 6 engaging the rocker, and side flanges 4 is secured in the rocker chamber C by screws passing through tapped apertures 11 in a channel-section, metal bridge 9 and aligned apertures 12 in the flanges 4. Teats 7 on the closure seat against the forward corners of the rocker chamber and flexibility-increasing ribs 8 are provided. The rear end of the clipper is provided with openings 19 to the atmosphere which are protected by a detachable gauze filter 20 supported by a cap 21 removably secured to the screw-threaded end of a suction pipe 18.
