Abstract

742,579. Screw-actuated slide valves. SMITH & SONS (NOTTINGHAM), Ltd., S., and BROWN, F. Aug. 28, 1953 [May 29, 1952], No. 13627/52. Class 135. A screw-actuated slide valve comprises a valve body 1, Fig. 1, closed at its lower end and having a bore 3 extending upwardly to an open mouth to receive a metal neck ring 119, resilient packing rings and a gland 18 which surround a valve-operating spindle 5 carrying telescopic valve parts 34, 35 urged apart by a spring into contact with hardened seating surfaces 25, 26 formed on the ends of inlet and outlet ducts 32, 33 welded to the valve body. The body 1 is formed with a flange 2 to which the gland 18 is secured and which supports pillars 7, 8 mounting a bridge-piece 11 having a screw-threaded bore engageable with a screw-threaded sleeve 13 which mounts a hand wheel 14 and cooperates with screw-threads 12 on the spindle 5. The screw-threads between the bridge-piece and the sleeve and those between the sleeve and the spindle are of opposite hand permitting controlled movement of the sleeve in the same direction as the spindle and comparatively quick operation of the valve. A cross-bar 16 engaging the pillars 7, 8 prevents rotation of the spindle 5. The valve is dismantled for servicing by removing the gland and bridge nuts rotating the hand wheel in a valve-closing direction to raise the bridge-piece 11 which is then supported on the pillars and then rotating the hand wheel in a valve-opening direction whence the valve, packing, &c. may be removed. Sight holes 39 drilled through the bridge-piece 11, sleeve 13 and spindle 5 ensure correct reassembly of the valve parts. A suitablyworded instruction plate may be fitted to the bridge-piece.
