Abstract

In the production of polymers by the processes described in Specifications 650,947, 673,651, 673,652 and 718,106, the pyrolysis is carried out in the presence of steam. The pressure of the mixture of steam and vapour should not exceed 200 mm. Hg absolute. Superheated steam may be used to supply part of the heat required for pyrolysis. Examples describe pyrolysing (1), (6) and (7) p-xylene, (2) chloro-p-xylene, (3) 2,5-dimethyl pyrazine, (4) pseudocumene, (5) a mixture of p-xylene and pseudocumene, washing the cooled deposited spongy product with acetone, ether or benzene and drying to form flakes.
