740,197. Gasifying solid and liquid fuels. KOPPERS GES., H. Jan. 25, 1954 [Feb. 2, 1953], No. 2243/54. Classes 55 (1) and 55 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] In a process of gasifying solid or liquid fuels.in finely divided form in suspension in gasifying agents containing free oxygen, e.g. oxygen or air of increased oxygen content, the gaseous products leave the producer 1 at a temperature of between 1200-1300‹ C. and pass firstly through a wasteheat boiler 3 leaving at a temperature of about 900-1000‹ C. and then through an indirect heat exchanger 5 where a proportion of the remaining sensible heat of the gases is imparted to a gaseous medium circulating in a closed circuit 6 which includes the heat exchanger 5 and a gas turbine 7, the latter being used to provide mechanical or electrical energy for the process, an arrangement being provided whereby, in the event of a temporary failure of the gas turbine 7, air is automatically supplied by a blower 14 to cool the gases passing through the heat exchanger 5. On leaving the heat exchanger 5 the gases which have a temperature of about 550‹ C. may be used in 9 which may be a boiler or a preheater for feedwater to the boiler 3. In operation valves 12 and 15 are normally closed and 17 is open; however when the blower 14 is working valves 12 and 15 are open and valve 17 is shut, the cooling air after passing through heat exchanger 5 leaving by a branch conduit 16.
