Fibrous material is dried, heated or cooled by periodical contact with a heated or cooled surface. The material is fed into the space between two cylinders 4, 6, either of which may be rotatable. The cylinder 4 is supported eccentrically within cylinder 6 and is heated or cooled by a liquid supplied through tube 17 to the cylinder 4 or to elements arranged in the jacket of the cylinder. The external cylinder may be arranged as a pressure or vacuum chamber and be heated or cooled. Material is fed into openings 13 and discharged through lower openings 24, 25 assisted by members 5, 11 on the inner cylinder 4, while condensate is removed from cylinder 4 by a scoop 3.
