Abstract
709,131. Drying sludge. VON ROLL AKT.- GES., L. July 31, 1951 [Aug. 14, 1950], No. 18162/51. Class 34(2) In a process for drying sludge in an apparatus comprising a preheater 3, an evaporator 4, and a plate dryer 6, the sludge being fed from a storage container 1 by a pump 2 to the preheater, evaporator and dryer in succession, the vapours formed in the evaporator are fed directly, and the vapours formed in the plate dryer T are fed through a washer 14, to a compressor 10 whence they are forced as heating media into the evaporator and the plates 7 of the plate dryer, part of the condensate from the evaporator being fed to the preheater and thence as cooling media and lubricants to the stuffing boxes 10a, of the compressor, and the sludge moved by rotary means in the evaporator and the dryer, is divided into rodlets on one of the central plates of the dryer by a sieve 44. The diameter of the drying plates 7a is smaller than the internal diameter of the container 32, so that the sludge fed from the evaporator through a pipe 5 falls through the space 7b on to plate 7c which has a central aperture 7d for passage of the sludge so that the sludge passes from one plate to another moved by scraper 43 and dry material is discharged via shoot 8. The vapours heated by compression in the compressor 10 pass through pipe 11 into evaporator ring heating elements 4a and thence into tank 17 via pipe 11a, and also through pipe 12 into the hollow plates 7a, 7c and thence to tank 17, condensate from washer 14 also being collected in the tank 17 from which condensate is fed through pipe 16a to the heating element 37 of the preheater and to the washer 14. Condensate from chamber 3 is fed through pipe 18 to tank 19 and thence to stuffing boxes 10a by pump. 20. A water-ring pump 21 draws uncondensed gases and air from the outlet shoot 8.
