Abstract

967,621. Grain &c. driers. F. T. KENNEDY. June 21, 1963 [Sept. 5, 1962], No. 24797/63. Heading F4G. A grain &c. drier comprises a cylinder 1 having secured to the bottom thereof an inverted conical cooling chamber 2, and an inner cylindrical drum 3 of smaller diameter than the cylinder 1 to form an annular passage 11 therebetween which has secured to the top a conical chamber 4, all except the bottom 3a of the drum 3 being of perforated metal sheet or the like. The grain to be dried passes via a centrally disposed worm gear conveyer 6 to an upper hopper 5 from whence it flows under gravity over the outer surface of the chamber 4 and through the annular passage 11, hot air from a pipe 10 passing into the cylinder 1 and chamber 4 and passing through the perforations therein for exhaustion to atmosphere. The dried grain flows down the inclined inner surface of the cooling chamber 2 where cold air is drawn in through the perforated surface by a fan (not shown), the grain being collected from bagging shoots 12. In a modification the means for feeding heated air into the cylinder 1 comprises a heat exchanger which extracts the air heated in the cooling chamber and after further heating discharges this air into the dr 3. Baffles 7, 7a are mounted on the outer s face of the chamber 4 and interior surface of the cooling chamber to control the depth of grain passing down the inclined surfaces thereof.
