Abstract

799,653. Vacuum drying. MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE OF CANADA. Dec. 14, 1956 [Sept. 11, 1956], No. 38262/56. Class 34(2) In apparatus for vacuum drying permeable material e.g. meat, the material is impaled on heat conducting spikes, 13, 14 projecting from heating plates 11, 12 which are housed in an evacuated chamber 21. This ensures more uniform conduction of heat to the interior of the material. The spikes are secured to the plates e.g. by welding, and the uppr ones are staggered with respect to the lower ones to ensure uniform heating. In a modification, see Fig. 6, (not shown) the material is supported by the spikes out of contact with the heating plates and a stripper is placed between the two. The spikes may comprise hollow tubes communicating with the upper surface of the plates and having transverse holes along their length to provide for the escape of water vapour from the interior of the material.
