Building-control mechanism, for cop winding machines, of the kind. including a feeler element 3 and a thread-guide 1 arranged for longitudinal movement parallel to the axis of the cop 2 and arranged automatically to initiate a. longitudinal feed movement of both the thread guide 1 and feeler element 3 when the diameter of the respective part of the cop 2 reaches a predetermined value, is provided with a. damping device associated with the feeler 3 to exert a damping effect on radial movements of the feeler and /or on the longitudinal feed movement. The feeler 3 is preferably a roller mounted on a pin 4 carried by pivoted bell-crank lever 5, 8, the arm 8 being connected to a piston 10 in a liquid-filled dashpot 11. The damping effect preferably varies as the square of the speed of movement of the feeler 3 in a radial direction.
