Abstract

557,861. Winding thread. BARKER, G. G. (Scharer, K. J., (trading as Maschinenfabrik Scharer)). June 5, 1942, No. 7670. [Class 120 (ii)] In a cop winding machine having means for winding a thread reserve at the base of the spool the thread guide is automatically moved along a reciprocating rod into position for winding the reserve and after the winding of the reserve is coupled to a thread guide carrier rod by a locking device for movement therewith for producing the main winding and is intermittently advanced along the carrier rod by feeler means which is separate from the thread guid. As shown the spools 5 are carried by a member 3 which is intermittently rotated to take a wound spool from the winding position and place an empty spool in such position where it is automatically coupled to a driving shaft and engaged by a counterhead 6 actuated by a slide 7, mounted on horizontal bars 8, 9 fixed to the casing 1, and carrying a rockable member 12, 13 engaged by a stirrup 14 on a rod 15 which is adjustably connected to a slotted arm 17 on a one-revolution shaft 78 ; the rod 15 consists of several telescopic parts within a spring 19 disposed between stops 20, 21 and relative movement between the parts of the rod is allowed if the movement of the slide 7 is obstructed. The thread guide 35 is carried by a stirrup 33, the limbs of which embrace a reciprocating traverse rod 32 and one of which is additionally guided by a rod 34, and a locking sleeve 36 on the rod 32 is disposed between the limbs of the stirrup and carries balls co-operating with a conical sleeve 37 which is forced by a spring 40 into position to force the balls against the rod 32 so that the thread guide is reciprocated by the rod 32. A projection 41 on the sleeve 36 co-operates with a feeler disc 31 carried by a sleeve 30 having part of its bore threaded to cooperate with a spindle 26 having its circumference partly threaded and having one end remote from the machine casing 1 mounted in a spring loaded bushing 28 carried by a rod 10 secured to the casing in the same vertical plane as the bars 8, 9, while the other end of the spindle 26 engages a horizontal slot in a guide 25 adjustably fixed to the rod 10 and having another slot engaged by the depending leg of a stop 24 adjustable on a screw 23 on a member 22 adjustably fixed on the rod : by these means the spindle 26 may be moved transversely of the depending leg of the stop 24 to a limited extent. At the start of the main winding the disc 31 co-operates with a roller 42, the roller being detachably mounted by internal balls and a spring on the legs of a stirrup 46 carried by a plate 47 pivotally connected to a plate 48 by a screw 49 and adjustably connected thereto, to vary the conicity of the windings, by a screw and slot 50, 51, the conicity being indicated by a pointer 47<SP>1</SP> on the plate 47 co-operating with a scale on the plate 48. The axial length of the initial cone wound on the spool is determined by the position of the stop 24, the feeler travelling along the roller 42 until the spindle 26 meets the depending leg of the stop when the feeler contacts with the winding at its maximum diameter and is intermittently advanced along the spindle, bearing against the projection 41 and so shifting the sleeve 36 along the reciprocating rod 32 against the action of the spring 39, the sleeve and thread guide being then clamped in its advanced position on the rod by the spring 40 moving the sleeve 37 to force the balls against the rod. As the wound spool approaches completion and the feeler the end of its traverse, the slide 7 is moved away from the casing 1 by the rotation of the shaft 18, the feeler is disengaged from the threads of the spindle 26 to finish the winding, and the counter head 6 is disengaged from the wound spool ; the member 3 is then rotated to take the wound spool from the winding position and position an empty spool for winding and the slide 7 is returned to its initial position carrying the feeler with it. At the end of the return movement of the slide 7 the member 12, 13 is rocked so that the part 13 engages the stirrup 33 and moves the thread guide rearwards against the action of the spring 39 to a position opposite the groove 5<SP>1</SP> of the spool when the reserve winding is wound thereon ; a gear 53 arranged on the slide 7 also engages a driven pinion 54 and arrests the return movement of the slide, the spring 19 is stressed, the gear 53 is rotated to stress a spring connected therewith as described in Specification 539,776 until a recess 53<SP>1</SP> in the gear registers with the pinion 54 when the part 12 of the member 12, 13 meets a stationary stop 11 adjustable on the bar 9 and the member is rocked to release the stirrup 33 which moves under the action of the spring 39 to position for the commencement of the main winding and the spring 19 moves the slide back to its original position, the gear 53 moving away from the pinion 54 and being rotated back to its initial position by its spring. Specification 548,478 also is referred to.
