An appliance for making coil springs on a plain cylindrical mandrel comprises a non- rotatable body provided with a boring adapted to be sleeved over the mandrel for axial displacement thereon, a guide on said body for incoming wire to be coiled, and a pitch gauge abutment on said body, said abutment being disposed parallel to the axis of said boring and adjacent to the bore thereof. The end of wire 6 to be coiled is held by a projection 4 on a rotary carrier 2 on to a plain rotating mandrel 1 to which the wire 6 is guided for coiling by a non-rotatable coiling appliance 7. The appliance 7 comprises a body 8 with a bush 9a secured therein having an eccentric bore 9 through which the mandrel 1 passes. The wire 6 passes through a guide 11 on the body 8 to the mandrel 1. A pitch gauge abutment 12 extends from a housing 13 on the body 8 parallel to the mandrel 1 with its nose 14 bearing on the wire coiled on the mandrel, so that as the mandrel 1 rotates and the wire 6 is fed the appliance 7 is moved axially of the mandrel, the abutment 12 determining the pitch of the coil. A steady bar 8a extending from the body 8 is guided during such axial movement by a fixed rod 10 parallel to the mandrel 1. The abutment 12 is retracted into the body by springs 17, 22 and is projected by the rotation, by a lever 26, of a cam 23 bearing against a slide 20 and a fixed but adjustable stop 25. The first coil of the spring is wound with the abutment 12 retracted to provide an approximately flat end coil.
