[Also in Division B8] The unwinding tension of lapping material is controlled by means including a feeler arm mounted to abut the periphery of a roll of the lapping material, a tappet rod arranged to transmit a loading to a brake shoe and means for varying the longitudinal position of the tappet rod in consequence of changes in the position of the feeler arm. A cam 39 follows the movements of the feeler arm 37 and causes longitudinal movement of the tappet rod 45 which bears against the free end of a brake shoe through a spring 47 which is thereby released in direct ratio to the change of tape roll diameter. The basic loading of the spring 47 may be varied by manipulation of a control knob 54 operating through a shaft 50 to move longitudinally of the rod 45 an abutment collar 46 mounted on the screw-threaded end of the rod 45. Tape from the roll 14 passes over a roller 36a of a tension gauge 36 to a guide roller 29 mounted in a bracket 27 capable of being accurately positioned by micrometer adjustment means 30. The bracket 27 is carried on a rod 26 movable by a wheel 32 to provide coarse adjustment for the guide roller 29. A stop motion may operate when the feeler arm 37 nears the core of the tape roll 14 to enable the lapping heads to be reloaded. Whilst reloading, the feeler arm 37 is held to one side by a catch and microswitches may be arranged to prevent re-starting of the machine until all the feeler arms are correctly in position.
