Abstract
843,080. Winding yarns, tension setting means. ABBOTT MACHINE CO. Inc. Dec. 22, 1958, No. 41289/58. Class 120(2). A winding machine with several winding units including adjustably loaded tension devices has tension device setting mechanism adapted to apply load to the tension devices and means for causing relative motion between the setting mechanism and the several tension devices so as to associate the setting mechanism with the several tension devices in succession, the setting mechanism being adjustable to establish various degrees of loading of the several tension devices. In the embodiment shown the tension disc 21 is pressed against disc 20 by a cranked lever 24 which is acted upon through a torque reducing device by a torsion spring 30 enclosed in tube 31. At its other end spring 30 carries a rotatable member 44 which is used to put the spring in a state of tension and thus load the tensioner. The member 44 is rotated by rack 54 on arm 55 past which each winding unit travels and the arm is urged yieldingly upward by spring pressed plunger 57. The arm 55 carries, in adjustable manner, a shield 60 which engages with a sleeve 61 on member 44 and during this engagement the rack 54 is prevented from engaging the member 44. When the sleeve 61 reaches the end of the shield 60 the rack 54 rises into mesh with the member 44 and rotates it until it leaves the rack. The rotation of member 44 is held by a suitable pawl arrangement. The length of the rolling engagement of member 44 with rack 54 as regulated by the position of shield 60 regulates the degree of torsion applied to spring 30 and consequently the loading of the tension device. As each winding unit approaches the tension setting device the pawl mechanism may be released by a cam thus allowing the member 44 and spring 30 to return to the neutral position. In operation once the tension devices of all the winding units have been set to give the desired tension in the yarn being wound the setting mechanism is thrown out of action until it is desired to change the setting of the tension devices.
