[Class 120 (ii)] In a machine for winding yarns &c. in which the winding spindle is driven by friction wheels and the driving wheel is moved across the face of the driven wheel on the winding spindle, by connections from the yarn guide bearing on the package on the winding spindle, to increase the speed of the latter as the package increases in diameter, the axis of the spindle wheel is disposed a little to one side of the axis of the driving wheel in the direction of the movement of the parts of the wheels in contact so that the axially movable driving wheel tends to move away from the axis of the spindle ; by this arrangement the means forcing the yarn guide against the package can be adjusted so that the guide bears against the package with only just sufficient force to prevent the driving wheel from being moved outwards across the face of the spindle wheel. As shown, the oscillatable frame 9 carrying the reciprocating yarn guide 7 is forced towards the cone p on the spindle h by a spring, the tension of which is adjusted by a screw threaded rod, and the movement of the frame towards the cone p is limited by an adjustable set screw; the frame is connected by a rod 14 with the arm 15a on a rock-shaft 15 carrying a forked arm 16 engaging studs projecting from a non- rotatable casing 17 housing a ball race on the driving wheel f on the shaft a extending along the machine frame and serving one or more winding heads. The axis of the spindle h is located a little below the axis of the shaft a carrying the driving wheel f, and the spindle wheel g is forced against the wheel f by a spring q and is moved away therefrom, when winding is completed, by a spring 3 on a pivoted handle 2 connected by a chain x with an arm on a rock-shaft v carrying a yoke u having rollers t engaging a collar s on the boss of the wheel g ; the handle 2 is normally held against the action of the spring 3 by a catch, and a spring 4 connected to the rock-shaft v normally holds the rollers t out of contact with the collar s. The spindle h is carried on a pedestal i adjustable on a casing j housing the cam 6 for reciprocating the yarn guide and the casing is secured to a table k having notched ribs engaging rails n, o extending lengthwise of the machine ; the ribs bear on the rail n at two places and a set-screw 5 adjustable in the table k bears upon the rail o so that the whole winding head is supported by a threepoint bearing on the rails and can be adjusted up or down relatively to the shaft a by adjusting the set-screw 5. The spindle wheel g is bevelled for winding a conical package and sets of bevelled wheels of different inclinations may be provided so that packages of different tapers may be wound by a suitable adjustment of the pedestal i on the casing j to suit the bevelled wheel used, or cylindrical packages may be wound by replacing the bevelled wheel by a plane wheel and adjusting the spindle h at right angles to the shaft a. The cam 6 is driven by change gearing from the shaft h so that the rate of reciprocation of the yarn guide may be varied in relation to the speed of the winding spindle.
