303,426. Fairbairn, Lawson, Combe, Barbour, Ltd., and Moorhouse, S. Sept. 29, 1927. Balling-machines. - In a machine for winding balls or like bundles of cord, twine &c., and of the type where. in the rotating spindle 12, Fig. 3, on which the ball is formed is oscillated while the thread is delivered by a flyer 2, the winding being automatically controlled so that the inner coils are spaced apart while the outer coils are wound closely together to form an even covering, the spindle-driving mechanism comprises gearing 14, 15. 16, Fig. 1, driven from a shaft 17 itself driven at a faster or slower speed through one of the sets of gearing 21, 19<a>, 20, 18, Fig. 4, or 26, 27, 29, 30, 31. 18a from the vertical shaft 22 which carries a friction disc 23 in driving engagement with a disc 24 adjustable on the shaft 8. A cam member 44<b>, Fig. 4, controls the movement of the clutch member carrying the wheels 18, 18a and a second cam 40 controls the oscillations of the spindle 12. The winding is completed during one revolution of the cam 40 and the motion of the machine arrested when the ball attains the desired size. The flyer 2 is driven by a belt 6, the spindle 12 being oscillated about the axis 13<a> through toothed members 42a, 43 by means of the cam 40 driven by gearing 32 - - 39 from the main shaft 8, the rack 42 being moved by the follower 41 against the action of counterweights. The cord x passes under tension from a supply bobbin 61, mounted in adjustable supports round guide pulleys 66, 67 and through the spindle 3 to the flyer 2, and at the commencement of winding the spindle 12 is driven more quickly to wind coils which are .spaced apart. After a predetermined time, the cam member 44b raises a hooked lever 47 which permits the shaft 45 to turn under the action of the weight 48 thereby moving the lever 52 which. slides the clutch member carrying the bevel wheels 18, 18a on the shaft 17 to reduce the speed of winding, the ball being completed with closely wound outer coils until a lug 40b contacts with a lever to move the belt on to the loose pulley.
