Class 120(2) A ring spinning and twisting machine in which the ring and the spindle are axially reciprocable with respect to each other, includes mechanism, to enable a tail to be wound about a part of the spindle not normally traversed by the ring, which gives the ring an additional relative axial displacement and includes a latch to maintain said displacement and a part movable relative to the latch and adapted to disengage the latch at a predetermined point in the traversing cycle. In the embodiment shown the ring holder 4 is carried in a rail 3 adjustably supported on a plunger 2 which can slide vertically in a channel shaped ring rail 1 reciprocated vertically in known manner. A cam member 8 is pivoted at 9 to the lower end of plunger 2. In operation the plunger 2 is depressed so as to lower the ring into a position for winding a transfer tail in the groove 15 of bobbin flange 14 and the cam member 8 pivots to the position shown in Fig. 2, thus retaining the plunger 2 in the depressed position. An arm 10 on the cam 8 pivots past a fixed projection 11 on the down stroke but on the upstroke is engaged by it so that the cam 8 is turned to its original position and thus the plunger 2 and the ring holder 4 return to the normal position under the action of spring 7. In a second embodiment the ring rail is fixed and the latch is operated by movement of the spindle and in a third embodiment the additional movement of the ring is achieved by rotating it, pins on the ring engaging slanting slots on the holder so as to provide axial movement.
