Abstract

Sizes for application to fibres or filaments of synthetic linear polymers comprise aqueous solutions of one or more polyalkylene glycols or condensates thereof with higher aliphatic alcohols or acids melting above 40 DEG C., together with one or more hygroscopic liquid polyhydric alcohols or hydroxyamines boiling above 150 DEG C. and themselves capable of dissolving little or none of the solid component so that on application of the size and drying them is deposited on the fibres or filaments a mixture of solid and liquid phases, 20-80 per cent of which is solid at room temperature. Suitable solid materials are polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, a condensate of polyethylene glycol with lauryl, dodecyl or cetyl alcohol, or a monostearate, monolaurate, monooleate, or monopalmitate of polyethylene glycol, or a condensate of polyethylene glycol with the monostearate of anhydrosorbitol. Suitable hydroscopic liquids are glycerol, mono-, di or triethanolamine, diethylene glycol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, or monopropanolamine. Sodium sulphate or sodium glycerophosphate may be dissolved in glycerol to lessen the solubility of polyethylene glycol therein. Similarly, ethanolamine may be partially neutralized with acetic acid. Dyes may be added to the sizes for temporary or permanent tinting of the fibres. In examples: (1) a condensate of ethylene oxide and cetyl alcohol is added with diethylene glycol, triethanolamine and acetic acid to water at 50 DEG C. The cooled solution is used to size yarns of polyhexamethylene adipamide; (2) glycerol containing sodium sulphate is used in place of the diethylene glycol, triethanolamine and acetic acid; (3) a size is made by dissolving glycerol, polyethylene glycol and sodium sulphate is water.
