Abstract

Cellulosic materials, e.g. cotton and linen fabrics, are brightened by impregnating them at temperatures under 100 DEG C. with an aqueous solution of a salt of at least one compound having the formula <FORM:0964222/D1-D2/1> in which A1 and A2 are phenyl radicals which may be substituted by alkoxy, alkyl, carboxyl, sulphonic acid or sulphamyl groups and by halogen atoms and X1 and X2 are alkoxy groups which may be substituted, primary amino groups or secondary or tertiary amino groups having aliphatic, araliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic nitrogen substituents which, together with the nitrogen atom and, if desired, further hetero atoms, can also form hydrogenated heterocycles, and then treating them at temperatures of 60 DEG -100 DEG C. with an aqueous solution of at least one water soluble salt of a poly ortho phospheric acid or of polymetaphospheric acid, e.g. sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate or tetrasodium pyrophosphate, which may also contain anionic surface active agents, e.g. alkylarylsulphonates, fatty alcohol sulphates, sulphated partial esters of glycerine with higher fatty acids, sulphosuccinic acid esters of medium alkanols having 6-12 carbon atoms, fatty acid sarco sides and fatty acid-N-alkyl taurides and their water soluble salts, or nonionic surface active agents, e.g. polyethylene glycol ethers of alkyl phenols having at least 8 ethenoxy groups. After treatment in the second bath the materials may subsequently be rinsed with cold water, wrung out and dried. X1 and X2 may be methoxy, ethoxy, b hydroxyethel, b methoxyethoxy, b ethoxy-ethoxy, amino, methylamino, ethylamine, propylamino, b hydroxyethylamino, b hydroxypropylamino, b cyanoethyl amine, dimethylamino, diethylamino, bis-b -hydroxy ethylamino, N-methyl-N ethylamino, N-methyl-N-b -hydroxyethylamino, N ethyl-N-b -hydroxyethylamino, N methyl-N-b -hydroxypropylamino,N ethyl-N-hydroxypropylamino, benzylamino, N-b -hydroxy ethyl-benzylamino, cyclohexylamino, N-ethyl-cyclohexyl-amino, N-b -cyanoethyl cyclohexylamino, phenylamino, o, m-or p-methylphenylamine, 3, 5-, 2, 5- or 3, 4- dimethyl phenylamino, m or p-methoxy, ethoxy, chloro, bromo sulpho, sulphonyl or carboxy phenylamino, 2, 5 dimethyl-4-sulphophenylamino, 4-chloro-3-carboxy phenylamino, carboxymethylamino, N-methyl-carboxymethylamino, 2-methoxyethylamino, N methyl-2-methoxy-ethylamino, 2 ethoxyethylamino, 3 methoxypropylamino, piperidino or morpholine group.
