Abstract

Organic fibres are dyed by impregnating them below the drawing temperature of the dye with an aqueous solution or dispersion of a non-cationic dyestuff, which may be thickened, and which contains amides of saturated, aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having 8-14 C atoms with primary or secondary amines having at least one hydroxyalkyl of 1-4 C atoms or alkoxyalkyl group each alkyl of which having 1-4 C atoms, sulphated surface active polyglycol ethers or the soluble salts thereof, the weight ratio of the acid amides to the sulphated polyglycol ethers being 2 : 1 to 1 : 2 and, optionally, other additives, the pH being 2-10 thereafter finishing with a heat treatment. The preferred acid amides are bis-(w-hydroxyalkyl)-amides of said acids, preferably coconut oil fatty acids. The preferred polyglycol ethers are derived from fatty alcohols of 8-14 C atoms, e.g. lauryl alcohol, or from higher alkylated phenols, e.g. p-nonyl-phenol, and 1-20, preferably 2-3, ethylene oxide residues. The said mixture of surfactants may also contain isopropanol or a b -alkoxy-ethanol. The dye composition may further contain an acid, a metallising agent (when metallisable dyes are used) and bactericidal and fungicidal compounds. The fibres to be dyed are especially polyamides, e.g. wool, silk and nylon but may also be of cellulose dito tri-acetate, aromatic polyesters, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile polymers and copolymers, polyurethanes, polyolefins and polyvinyl alcohol or blends thereof. Among the suitable dyes are acid, disperse and reactive dyes which may contain metal atoms or be metallisable. The dye liquors are best applied by printing or especially padding and the heat treatment, which is preferably treatment with neutral saturated steam or in an acid "shock" bath at 80-98 DEG C., is applied without intermediate drying. Many examples are given.
