Abstract

Stable, water-containing solutions of normally insoluble or difficultly soluble azo dyestuffs contain (a) an azo dye containing at least one weakly acid group, i.e. a hydrogen atom capable of being substituted, and (b) a cationic surface active agent. The solutions may also contain a strongly basic agent and/or an organic solvent. The quantity of surfactant (b) required may be 2-40, preferably 5-20 times by weight the weight of dyestuff used. The dye may first be dissolved in a strong aqueous solution of surfactant (b) and then the base and organic solvent may be added if required or alternatively the dye may first be dissolved in the base and organic solvent to which solution the surfactant is added. A very large number of suitable cationic surfactants (b) are specified which fall into the following classes: fatty amines and derivatives and oxyethylation products thereof, preferably in the form of their salts, especially compounds of the formula <FORM:1007760/D1-D2/1> where R is an organic radical of at least 8C, R1, R2 and R3 are alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radicals which may be substituted or together with the N form a heterocycle and X is an anion; quaternary phosphonium compounds of the formula: <FORM:1007760/D1-D2/2> tertiary sulphonium compounds of the formula: <FORM:1007760/D1-D2/3> where the letters have the same meaning as before, as well as condensation products of fatty amines or their salts with up to 30 mols ethylene or propylene oxide. It is preferred to use products whose pH is above 8. The specified organic solvents are ethanol, butanol, ethyldiglycol, ethylthiodiglycol, polyethylene glycols of M.W. up to 500, dimethylformamide, phosphoric acid trisdimethylamide, acetone and dimethylsulphoxide. The strong bases are preferably alkali metal hydroxides or ammonia. Suitable azo dyestuffs are known pigments containing the weakly acid groups, e.g. an hydroxyl bound to aromatic nuclei, carboxylic acid amide groups bound to or standing between aromatic nuclei, cyanuric acid amide groups, enolisable groups in acylacetyl compounds and pyrazolones or derivatives thereof and carboxylic acid amide groups in a heterocyclic ring. The solutions may further contain polyethylene glycols of M.W. 150-20,000 as well as addition products of ethylene oxide with alcohols, fatty acids or alkyl phenols. The solutions may be employed to dye or print leather, fibres, yarns, fabrics and fleeces of natural or regenerated cellulose, cellulose esters, wool, silk, polyamide, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride and aromatic polyesters. When dyeing synthetic materials carriers may also be employed and when printing, alkali-resistant thickeners may also be employed. The dyed or printed material may be dried and then developed (i.e. the insoluble dye is precipitated) by treatment, preferably at room temperature, with an acid bath of pH 1-5 or with an excess of water. White and coloured resists under the pad-dyeings of the invention may be prepared using a suitable acid resist agent. Examples are given.
