Abstract
A detergent suitable for washing textile materials, e.g., cotton, linen and other cellulosic materials, contains a small proportion of a substantive blue-fluorescent substance. Advantageously, the detergent contains less than 1 per cent. by weight and preferably between 0.001 per cent. and 0.1 per cent by weight of the blue-fluorescent substance, suitably showing an absorption maximum within the region from about 3,400 to 3,700 Angstrom. The detergent may be added in the form of a solution or suspension in water or in admixture with other ingredients such as perfumes, anti-oxidants or any other ingredient. Specified blue-fluorescent substances are di-benzoyl-aminostilbene-sulphonic acid or a nuclear substitution derivative thereof, and salts of these acids, e.g., 4 : 41-di-benzoyl-aminostilbene 2 : 21-disulphonic acid, a nuclear substitution derivative thereof, and salts of these acids; 4 : 41 - di-p-aminobenzoylamino-stilbene-2 : 21 disulphonic acid, and salts thereof sodium 4 : 41-p-methylbenzoylaminostilbene - 2 : 21 disulphonate, and the corresponding 3 : 31-disulphonates. Other specified substances are dibenzyl derivatives such as sodium 4 : 41-dibenzoyl-aminodibenzyl-2 : 21-disulphonate; benzidine derivatives such as sodium dibenzoyl-benzidine 3 : 31-dicarboxylate; derivatives of benzthiazole such as 41-amino-1-phenyl-5-methylbenzthiazole; and the symmetrical urea derived from 4-amino-41-benzoylaminostilbene 2 : 21-disulphonic acid and salts thereof. Specified detergents are soap products, generally in powder form, containing sodium carbonate, sodium silicate, various phosphates and soap adjuncts; non-soapy detergents such as sulphonated or sulphated high molecular weight alkyl compounds such as higher alkyl sulphonates and sulphates, fatty acid esters of isethionic acid. In an example ordinary soap containing from 0.003 to 0.06 per cent. of the weight of the soap of the sodium salt of 4 : 41 di-p-aminobenzoyl aminostilbene -2 : 21 disulphonic acid is used for washing white cotton and linen materials in a series of comparative tests. The wash liquor is made up by dissolving about 0.4 per cent. (calculated on the weight of water) of each soap product in hard water, and the materials are washed therein either at about 40 DEG C. or at the boil and are rinsed at least twice in clean water. Specifications 16040/94, [Class 91], 442,530, 522,672, [both in Group VIII], 567,716 and 584,436 are referred to.ALSO:A detergent suitable for washing textile materials, e.g cotton, linen and other cellulosic materials, contains a small proportion of a substantive blue-fluorescent substance.
