Abstract

730,766. Stuffing - box substitutes. NATIONAL MOTOR BEARING CO., Inc. Oct. 13, 1953 [Oct. 22, 1952; Feb. 9, 1953], No. 28182/53. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXXIV] A railwav vehicle axle seal comprises a flexible diaphragm C having a central axle receiving portion A, a rim supporting portion B including an expansion device to prevent sliding movement within the parallel walled slot of the axle box, and means whereby the expansion device may be releasably locked to facilitate assembly. The rim portion B comprises telescoping annular members 20, 21 which are forced apart by circumferentially - spaced springs 24 located on studs 47 secured to the member 20. A resilient member 33 is secured to the member 20 and engages the wall 27 of the slot. The sealing portion A includes a garter spring 41 and a ring G which not only ensures conformity with the shaft but also protects the seal against damage. The locking means comprise studs 49, 50 secured to the members 21, 20 having interengageable head portions 51, 52. A slot closure device comprises a resilient member 83 clamped between plates 81, 84 in the mouth of the slot. Filtering material 87 such as steel wool is disposed beneath the plate 81. In a modification a single annular member 25, Fig. 11, is located at the rim and the locking means comprise washers 55 or pins which hold the individual springs 24 compressed. The member A is given additional support by rings 91.
