822,994. Stuffing-box substitutes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. July 15, 1958 [Aug. 12, 1957], No. 25386/57. Class 122 (5). Sealing means for a compressor or other shaft 16 passing through an aperture 17 in a casing 11 into a case 12 removably secured to the casing comprises a cylindrical flange 21 secured to the casing and projecting inwardly from the aperture and a sealing plate 22 that is slidably mounted within the flange 21 and is normally held clear of a collar 23 on the shaft by an extension 25 on the case 12 but, when the case is removed from the casing, is urged into contact with the collar 23 by a spring 24 to seal the interior of the casing.
