Abstract
505,145. Stuffing -box substitutes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 13, 1938, No. 20817. Convention date, July 14, 1937. [Class 122 (v)] Comprises a rubbing-collar device for a totally-enclosed dynamo-electric machine which is normally inoperative but which functions when inspecting, &c. the current-collecting devices which are housed in an auxiliary gastight housing 6 attached to the main casing which is normally charged with hydrogen through a connection 11 controlled by a valve 12. These devices are mounted upon an extension 4 of the main shaft which carries an annular sealing-ring 13. The end of the casing 2 carries a stationary annular grooved part 16. The groove has parallel sides with a halfround part between. An annular element 19 is slidable axially in the groove 18 against the resistance of springs 24 mounted on studs 22 secured to the stationary ring 16. The element 19 carries a sealing-ring of rubber &c. 27. Sealing is effected by an extensible, rubber &c. tube 29 mounted in the groove 18 and chargedwith compressed air. Studs limit the movement of the ring 19 and prevent a metal-tometal contact with ring 13.
