Abstract
Polyvinyl formacetals containing acetyl groups are prepared by the action of formaldehyde or a substance yielding formaldehyde on a polyvinyl alcohol containing acetyl groups using a mixture of aqueous hydrochloric acid and glacial acetic acid, the proportion of glacial acetic acid to hydrochloric acid being adjusted according to the content of acetyl groups desired in the end product, a higher proportion of glacial acetic acid being used when a product of higher acetyl group content is required. The preferred aqueous mixture of hydrochloric acid and acetic acid is one containing 1-19 per cent of hydrogen chloride and 5-60 per cent acetic acid. The preferred reaction temperature range is from 50 DEG to 70 DEG C.
