1333227 Propionaldehyde BAYER AG 17 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969 (2)] 54579/70 Heading C2C Propionaldehyde is prepared by passing alkyl alcohol in the gaseous phase at elevated temperature over a catalyst containing Pd, preferably in the absence of O 2 . The allyl alcohol may be derived from the reaction of propylene, O 2 and acetic acid followed by hydrolysis of the allyl acetate thus obtained and may be admixed with any or all of the other products contained in the reaction mixture. Acetic acid may be recycled to the allyl acetate preparation either before or after the propionaldehyde formation step, thus giving an overall process for the preparation of propionaldehyde from propylene and oxygen.
