Abstract
b -Butyrolactone is produced by treating diketene in the liquid phase at temperatures from room temperature up to 100 DEG C. with hydrogen in the presence in the reaction mixture of a palladium catalyst. Palladized barium sulphate is the preferred catalyst and may be regenerated by ignition. Inert solvents may be used as diluent, e.g. benzene or ethyl acetate. Two examples are furnished, butyric acid being produced as a by-product.
