Abstract
527,665. Vinyl crotonate. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd., and TUERCK, K. H. W. April 18, 1939, No. 11712. [Class 2 (iii)] Vinyl crotonate is made by passing acetylene into a mixture of crotonic acid and a mercury catalyst in the presence of ethylidene dicrotonate at temperatures not about about 50‹ C. Excess of inorganic acid is avoided and sulphuric acid may be employed in quantity not more than half that necessary to produce mercuric sulphate. In examples (1) mercuric oxide dissolved in a mixture of sulphuric and crotonic acids is added to a solution of crotonic acid in ethylidine di-crotonate, and acetylene is introduced at 25-30‹ C. ; the vinyl crotonate is distilled off at 35-50‹ C. under 7-10 mm. pressure and the residual crotonic acid and ethylidine di-crotonate is used again ; (2) mercuric acetate is added to a solution of crotonic acid in ethylidine di-crotonate containing a little sulphuric acid, and acetylene is introduced at room temperature.
