Abstract
726,781. Motor vehicles. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Jan. 30, 1953 [Feb. 11, 1952], No. 3516/52. Class 79(3). In an engine-electric vehicle the engine room is divided into two compartments, one containing the internal combustion engine and the generator driven by the engine and the other the engine radiator, the compartments being separated by a transverse bulkhead, and a fan is arranged in the radiator compartment drawing separate streams of cooling air through the radiator and the engine compartment and exhausting the streams to atmosphere through a common exhaust vent. As shown, a diesel engine 12 (or a gas turbine), the electric generator 13 and an auxiliary generator 27 are arranged in one vehicle compartment separated by the bulkhead 10 from the compartment containing a compresser 17 and the radiator 15, the radiator forming with a part of the bulkhead a vertical duct at the top of which is arranged the fan 16, the fan and compressor being shaftdriven from the engine. The shaft drive for the fan may be replaced by an electric motor. The cooling air for the engine compartment enters through filters 26, circulating through the generators by fans therein, and passes into the vertical duct through variable aperture louvres 18 in the bulkhead and from thence is exhausted by the fan 16 through the vent in the vehicle roof. The fan 16 also exhausts air from the radiator compartment, such air entering the compartment through openings 25 and passing through the radiator 15 into the duct. The radiator may be of semi-circular section.
