Abstract

718,135. Cooling motors. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. March 18, 1953 [March 4, 1952], No. 5697/52. Class 79(3) In a vehicle engine installation of the kind in which the engine and gearbox compartments are separated by a bulkhead in which fan means is mounted to induce a flow of cooling air, said air entering the engine compartment from atmosphere and passing from the gear box compartment to atmosphere through an engine liquid coolant radiator, the exhaust manifolds and exhaust piping of the engine are partially or wholly enclosed in air ducting, having an inlet connection to the gear box compartment and an outlet at substantially atmospheric pressure, whereby cooling air is caused to flow through said ducting. As shown the bulkhead 14 separates compartments 10. 11 for the engine 12 and gear box 13 respectively. Fans 15 in the bulkhead are driven by the engine cause air to be drawn through louvres 16 over the engine and gear box; through the engine radiator 17 and out through louvres 18. The exhaust manifold and exhaust piping 19 are enclosed in the duct 20 connecting at 21 to the compartment 11 and having an outlet outside the compartments 10, 11. With this arrangement the temperature rise of the air in the compartment 10 is reduced and the efficiency of the radiator 17 is increased.
